Oftentimes, we get frozen as hitters. Sometimes, the pitcher makes a great pitch and you just need to tip your cap. Other times, it's a great pitch to hit but we just can't seem to pull the trigger. If you find yourself taking too many pitches that you want to be hitting, try out this simple change to your mindset.
We cannot make our minds up about if/when/how we swing until we see the ball. Otherwise, we're just guessing. However, we still have to be READY to hit before we make that decision. In other words, we need to ANTICIPATE swinging to be ready to hit on time. If your mind is in a state of uncertainty as you're picking up the ball, you won't be ready to hit when you need to pull the trigger. But if you are EXPECTING to swing as you're picking up the ball, you'll be ready if you want to take a hack.
We still need to see the baseball well to make decisions about swinging, but we should always anticipate swinging. Easier to anticipate swinging and take a pitch than it is to swing at a pitch when we aren't prepared.
